Phonemic Awareness

“Phonological awareness and phonemic awareness are highly predictive of early reading acquisition” (Five from Five, 2024)

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness

Kindergarten to Year 1 students participate in an 8-12 minute phonemic awareness lesson every day. This program is delivered by staff using the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness scope and sequence. Phonemic awareness is a component of phonological awareness, that is, the awareness of individual phonemes (sounds) in words. It involves the ability to segment, blend, delete and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Heggerty is used as an oral and auditory warm up to phonics instruction.
